Dr Philippe Pouletty, MD, Chairman of the Board
Biotech industry veteran with a dual experience in Silicon Valley and in France. Founder of three biotechnology companies, SangStat, Conjuchem, and DrugAbuse, two of which were successfully floated on the stock market with valuations of over $US 800 milions : SangSat (Nasdaq : SANG) went public in 1993 and was subsequently acquired by Genzyme for $US 600 millions, whereas Conjuchem floated in 2000 (Toronto Stock Exchange: CJB). Former Chairman of France Biotech, the French Biotechnology Industry Association and Former Vice-Chairman of Europabio, the European Biotech Industry Association. Inventor of 29 patents. Board member of BMD, Carmat, Cytomics, Deinove, Immune Targeting Systems (UK), Neovacs, Pharnext, Splicos, Symetis (Switzerland), Theraclion, Vexim, Wittycell. Independent board member of Innate Pharma. Dr P. Pouletty has been made a Knight of the French Legion of Honor (Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur). Qualified as a physicien (specialty : immunology) from the University of Paris VI, Immunologist, laureate from Pasteur Institute. Post-doctoral research fellow at Stanford University, won the 1999 American Liver Foundation Prize. A former member of the France's Council for Economic Attractiveness “Conseil Stratégique pour l’Attractivité de la France”, chaired by the French prime minister.
Philippe Duval, Chairman of the Executive Board at Tereos
Philippe Duval (aged 67) is an alumnus of HEC Paris Business School. He started his career at the Origny-Sainte-Benoite sugar refinery in 1968 and rose to become its Chief Executive Officer in 1984. He is currently Chairman of the Executive Board at the Tereos group. He is married and has four children, one of whom (Alexis Duval) is CFO of Tereos.
Pr Frédéric Dardel, Councillor to the Chairman of Paris-Descartes University, Technology Transfer Advisor
Phd in Molecular Biology, Frédéric Dardel is an alumnus of the elite Ecole Polytechnique - Paris. Up until April 2008, he ran the Life Sciences Department at the CNRS - National Scientific Research Council - and is presently Professor at the Paris Faculty of Pharmacy. From the outset of his scientific career, he became interested in the computerized analysis of biological sequences, in terms of both concepts and applications perspectives. His current research focus is on the structural and functional aspects of biomolecules of therapeutic interest. He is co-author, with François Képès, of " Bioinformactics : Genomics and Post-Genomics" (published by Editions de l'Ecole Polytechnique).
Paul-Joël Derian (Group Vice-President, Research & Development, Rhodia)
Paul-Joël Derian is a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure engineering school and holds a PhD in Physics from Pierre and Marie Curie University of Paris and a qualification in Strategic Marketing Management from Rutgers University. He started his career in 1981 as a teaching assistant. In 1985, he became a Junior Scientist at the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and then joined Rhône-Poulenc in a series of positions: Researcher in the Applications Laboratory, Manager of the Industry & Formulation Laboratory and Manager of the Cosmetics Applications and Technical Services Laboratory. From 1995 to 1997, he founded and headed the joint Rhodia/CNRS/Princeton University Complex Fluids Lab. In 1997, he created and then managed the multidisciplinary, 120-researcher Cranbury Research and Technologies Center in the USA. In 2000, he was appointed as Vice President R&D/Strategy in the Consumer Specialties Division. In 2002, he became Vice-President Rhodia Food & Global Market Director, Dairy, Desserts, Beverages & Health. In 2003, he was appointed as Group Vice-President, Research & Development. He joined the group's Executive Committee in 2005
Christian Pierret, Attorney at Law, Paris Bar, 2002
Christian Pierret holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in The Economic Sciences (1970) and is a graduate of the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (1972). He has served as Rapporteur General for the budget at the French House of Representatives (Assemblée Nationale) (1981-1986).Chairman of the Caisse des Dépôts state savings bank monitoring committee (1988-1993), Vice-President of the Accor Group (1993-1996), Congressman for The Vosges between 1978 and 1993, Mayor of Saint-Dié des Vosges since 1989,and former Minister for Industry, SME’s, Trade and Crafts. Christian Pierret is an expert in regulatory affaires, product liability and European competition Law. He instigated in February 2002" the "Pierret Act" which opened the French market to competition in the electricity and telecoms sectors. He wrothe the book "Ministre à gauche - le magique et le réel" (Ed. Le Pré-aux-Clercs, 2002) and has penned numerous articles in the economic and political press (Les Echos, La Tribune, Le Figaro, Le Monde, Financial Times, etc.).
Pr Rodney J. Rothstein, Professor of Genetics and Development, Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons
Rodney Rothstein received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1975, where he started his studies on yeast genetics in 1970. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Rochester and Cornell University before taking a position as Assistant Professor of Microbiology at UMDNJ-Newark (1979-84). He joined the Columbia University Medical Center in 1984 and was promoted to full Professor in 1998. He has had appointments at the University of Paris VI (1992), René Descartes University, Faculty of Medecine-Necker Children's Hospital (1999) and at The Institut Curie, Paris (Mayent-Rothschild Boursier, 2005, 2007-2011). He pioneered the use of recombination to alter genomes and has used these methods to isolate novel genes involved in the maintenance of genome stability. He is an expert in yeast genetics and uses cell biological approaches to understand the cellular response to DNA alterations and to study recombination mechanisms. From 1984 to 1988, he was member of the National Science Foundation Advisory Panel for Eukaryotic Genetic Biology. From 1993 to 1997, he was a member of the National Advisory Council for Human Genome Research of NIH (National Institute of Health). He is and has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of several bio-pharmaceutical companies including Cellectis, SA. In 2009, he was award the Novitski Prize by the Genetics Society of America in recognition of his outstanding creativity in solving genetic problems. He has over 100 publications and is the holder of 5 patents on the use of yeast in biotechnology.
Nabil Sakkab
Dr Nabil Y. Sakkab graduate from the American University of Beirut (1970) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. He joined Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati in 1974, following a doctorate in Chemistry from the Illinois Institute of Technoly in 1973, and post doctorate studies at Texas A&M. Dr Sakkab retired from P&G in 2007 as Senior Vice President, Corporate Research and Development. He served on P&G's Leadership Council and the Innovation Committee of P&G’s Board of Directors. He is a thought leader and worldwide speaker in the Open Innovation movement, the author of several scientific and Innovation Management publications and co-inventor on several patents. Dr Sakkab was awarded the 2007 IRI Medal for Leadership in R&D Management and the 2007 Holland award for best article in Innovation Management. He currently serves on the Boards of Altria, Givaudan, Deinove and Aplion Medical.
